It’s day three of our summer challenge, and hopefully you’ve tried a few new workouts by now. But today we’re shaking things up with a new type of challenge, one that goes beyond being active: snack healthy.

We’ve written before about how to master your fridge, which is a great start along the healthy-eating path. And if you’ve ever tried tracking your food or searched for healthy recipes on your web browser of choice, there’s a lot out there to help you out. But even the best-laid meal plans can succumb to unhealthy snacking habits. So today, and hopefully moving forward until summer begins, the goal is to check the nutritional info whenever you reach for a snack and try to make the healthiest choice you can.

100 Calorie snack attack

To help you get started, here’s just a few of our favorite snacks that help give you energy and fill you up – all for under 100 calories!

  • 33 Grapes
  • 10 baby carrots and 2 tbsp hummus
  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup shelled edemame
  • 2 egg whites on whole wheat toast
  • 1 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
  • shrimp cocktail (8 shrimp, 2 tbsp cocktail sauce)
  • ½ cup baked kale
  • 1 stalk celery with 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 cup spinach w/ ½ cup strawberries and 1 tbsp balsamic dressing

Have a frozen bag of edamame in the freezer seems like a good day to get them out. I always have grapes in the fridge. Love this challenge.

A nice juicy apple is one of my favorite under-100 calorie snacks. I also like fiber crackers, they really take the edge off mid-afternoon hunger. For some reason unhealthy snacks just leave me feeling more hungry!

Could it be because they have wheat in them?

Last week I got sloppy and was eating way too many nuts for a snack…today will be edamame…better choice, still high in protein but much lower calories and fat. Costco has them frozen in individual serving packets.

Thank you for the ideas. Snacking is always a problem when trying to manage diet. I very much appreciate the suggestions, especially the celery and peanut butter. :)
