“I Ditched My Car to Outrun Diabetes,” says Kodi S.

When we hear about Fitbit users who’ve reached their goals, we love to share the news! Kodi S. surpassed his goals— beyond what he even thought possible! Here is Kodi’s success story, in his own words.

“Growing up, I would have never been considered a “natural” athlete, nor an active person. By the age of 26, I had ballooned to over 350 pounds and was at risk for several medical issues, including diabetes and high blood pressure. I knew I had to make a dramatic change to save my life.

Upon moving to a walkable city, I ditched my car and began daily walks, which over time grew in distance and intensity. At my heaviest weight, vigorous activity was not an option. I started with reasonable goals, using a basic pedometer, attempting to reach 10,000 steps (or 5 miles daily).

I began walking 3 miles to work daily, and before I knew it, I was approaching 7,000 steps by 9am, motivating me to push harder. Not only was I reducing my carbon footprint, but walking was something I could faithfully commit to.

The weight began to fall off, but it wasn’t until I discovered my first Fitbit tracker that I truly found lasting success.

From clocking my number of steps, entering my daily meals and seeing other variables (heart rate, water consumption, etc), Fitbit and its dashboard have educated me on how my body responds to fitness, and what I need to keep my machine in order. Over time, I became “half my size,” ultimately losing 175 pounds through consistent diet and exercise. Today, I enjoy a number of activities, including running, cycling and hiking. Beginning in 2012, I began running half marathons, an accomplishment I could have never imagined years ago.

I have learned that consistent effort yields results. My favorite mantra is that I “make routines, not resolutions.” Fitbit came along at a pivotal moment in my journey, encouraging me to push myself further, helping me to quantify my daily movement and keep myself in my ideal weight range.

With Fitbit, I have never been more engaged or in tune with my body and fitness on a daily basis. Oh, and my average daily steps today? Over 20,000 steps!

Some days, I feel as if my Fitbit tracker is encouraging me to be more active just by being present on my body. It is validating to meet your daily goal, as well as finding ways to be even more active because of it. I love that my Fitbit tracker has instilled better habits for me, such as finding ways to sneak steps into my day, whether it is skipping the elevator and taking the stairs, or taking an evening walk to meet or exceed my daily goals.

Today, I blog on health issues at my website, share inspirational quotes on social media sites, and curate monthly music mixes to motivate others to workout. I want to share the feeling of empowerment that this tool has given me.

In my circle, I’m seen as an unofficial Fitbit ambassador. I advocate for the products constantly! I’m never without my Fitbit Flex (in various colored bands) and the Aria scale. My circle of friends and colleagues and I keep track of our weekly progress and send messages teasing each other when someone is close to beating the other.

I have also made a new circle of friends via social media (Hi Stephanie and Kundia!) who have become my extended family. I am forever grateful to Fitbit for creating a culture of community and support!”
