Crash Dieting Didn’t Help This Couple Lose 80 Pounds. Here’s What Did.

how to lose weight fast: two success stories

About a year ago, my friend Khloe Kardashian approached me about Revenge Body with Khloé Kardashian, a before-and-after weight-loss show she was working on. The premise was simple: She would help men and women who were struggling with their weight “get their bodies back.”

My immediate reaction was hesitation—and for good reason. Over the years, I’ve been pitched a variety of weight-loss shows that often end up teaching the wrong lessons about losing weight. Many promote unhealthy behaviors—like crash dieting—over healthy, real-life strategies, which inevitably leads to the participants gaining back all the weight they lost (and then some), injuring themselves, or both.

But when Khloe said that I could help the participants to whom I was assigned in my own way and with my own methods, I immediately jumped on board. The show was going to treat the participants with compassion, and Khloe would personally be encouraging them along their journey.

The Healthy Way to Lose Weight Fast

I was also really excited to demonstrate the contrast between my method and the traditional personal-trainer methods made popular by these types of shows. Too often the message is that you have to kill yourself in the gym, suffering through hours of excruciating workouts to achieve your body goals. If you watch the show, however, you’ll see that’s not true. My method is so simple and realistic that it’s accessible and workable for everyone—not just those with a high-priced trainer or a gym membership. My focus would be on teaching participants how to eat and move more effectively in their daily life—outside of the gym.

Working with my first pair, Nicole (wearing the glasses above) and Samantha, was a great experience because both of them were motivated for different reasons. Sam was motivated by the internal quest to return to the fit, athletic lifestyle she had before she met and fell in love with Nicole. Nicole was motivated by the need to prove to Sam that she could be the type of person that Sam could respect and admire for being able to take control of her health.

I put Sam and Nicole on the same program, which included hitting 14,000 steps a day (which they would track with a Fitbit Blaze), unplugging from technology at least one hour a day, sleeping at least seven hours a night, and following my Body Reset Diet.

You Get Lean in Life and Strong in the Gym

The number one reason Nicole and Sam gave for not eating well prior to us working together was lack of time. The Body Reset Diet accommodated their busy lives by giving them super quick and simple options, like smoothies and snacks. Once they were eating cleaner, I gradually moved them on to more regular meals based around lean protein, fibrous carbohydrates, and healthy fat.

In terms of exercise, we kept the workouts very, very simple and really only added them into their routine a couple of weeks into the program once Nicole and Sam learned that getting their steps in and being active all day was their primary movement goal. I taught them that you get lean in life and strong in the gym, and until they were able to regularly achieve their step goal and diet every day, the gym would be a waste of time. Their workouts consisted of supersetting (doing two exercises back to back, with little to no rest in between) two different body parts per day, one exercise for each body part.

For example:

Superset: Walk Lunge// Stiff-legged Dumbbell Deadlifts

5 to 8 sets of 15 to 30 reps

Superset: Cable Lat Pull-down// Standing Dumbbell Shoulder Press

5 to 8 sets of 15 to 30 reps

Superset: Single Arm Dumbbell Row// Lying Tricep Extension

5 to 8 sets of 15 to 30 reps

In the end, sensible eating, focused exercise, and building more movement into their day helped Nicole and Sam lose 50 and 30 pounds, respectively, over the course of 12 weeks. But if you ask me, I think those smiles say more than the scale ever could.
