What are dance classes?

Dance classes consist of any type of dancing, done in a group setting with an instructor. This can take a lot of different forms, from a salsa class at a downtown club to ballet to Zumba or other gym offerings, but all of them should make you break a sweat before class is over.

How do I get started?

How to begin depends on what sort of dance style you’re interested in learning about. If you’re looking for something built specifically for fitness-minded people, Zumba might be for you, and many gyms offer free classes as a part of your membership. If you’re looking for something more traditional and specialized, you have many options, from ballroom dancing to swing, and a quick internet search for classes in your area will let you know what’s available.

Different classes may require specialized equipment or clothing, but for the most part wearing comfortable, fitted clothes is best, as well as comfortable athletic shoes. Ask the gym or instructor ahead of time if there are requirements for dress or if any extra equipment is needed.

What are the health benefits of dance classes?

Different styles of dance classes will have varying results, but a few things are pretty universal:

  • Stress relief: Dancing is a great way to reduce the stress in your life. It can even help fight depression.
  • It’s good for your heart: Dancing is a great cardio workout, so it also helps reduce the risk for heart disease.

What else do I need to know about dance classes?

Dancing is a great workout for all ages and every fitness level. Because of the wide range of classes, there’s sure to be some convenient for you. If your gym offers multiple styles of dance classes, go ahead and try them all to figure out which you like best, and invite a friend along to make the experience social.

  • I take African dance classes and they are exercise, dance, aerobic and cardiovascular activity rolled into one . It is difficult because of the weight shifting, the synchronization of multiple body parts and moving at different speeds simultaneously. It’s great for the mind and body. It helps immensely that there is live drumming that students have to pay attention to (so you’re dancing with the music).
