Meet Your Fitbit Local Ambassadors: Washington, DCCynthia Lorena

Cynthia Lorena is known for her creative and dynamic sequences, as well as her focus on alignment, honesty, and sense of humor. She currently lives and teaches vinyasa yoga group classes and workshops in the DC metro area and leads international retreats, corporate classes, and corporate retreats. She also offers private instruction, energy work (Reiki), and breath work classes. Her extensive client list ranges from teens to senior citizens with a variety of specific needs such as back injuries, cancer, depression, and anxiety. Currently, Cynthia assists teacher trainings in DC and offers mentorships for new teachers.

Cynthia was born and raised in New York. While studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, she was fortunate to launch her career as a graphic designer in the fashion industry during her sophomore year of college. In 2010, Cynthia graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a BFA in Graphic Design.

During her time working in the fashion industry, she felt that something was missing. Following her intuition, she left behind her hectic NYC life and immersed herself in studying yoga in the mountains of Massachusetts to make her health, happiness, and personal growth a priority. In July 2011 she graduated from Kripalu’s School of Yoga with a 200-hour yoga teaching certificate. Shortly after, she returned to New York City to teach yoga full time. In 2014, Cynthia completed her advanced 500-hour teacher training certification at Yogamaya in New York City. She is also a certified Level 2 Reiki (energy) healer.

Gerard Burley, more affectionately known as Coach G, is the founder and owner of SWEAT DC, a gym housed in DC’s robust Petworth/Columbia Heights neighborhood. Coach G is known for his unique approach on fitness. He believes working out should be accepting, challenging, motivating, and fun. SWEAT DC is known for its signature 45-minute, high-intensity core-cardio-strength workout. Each day focuses on a different body part, allowing gym goers to create a total-body program geared towards building their best self. At SWEAT DC, that’s all combined with high energy instructors, exhilarating club lighting, and heart-pumping playlists.

Coach G has more than 15-years experience in exercise sports science. He received his Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a Master of Science in Exercise and Health Promotion from Cal U Pennsylvania. Coach G is originally from Baltimore but has been a DC resident since 2009. As a spokesperson on health and wellness, he is frequently called upon for media appearances and has been featured, quoted, and interviewed in outlets such as Bravo’s Real Housewives of Potomac, Fox News, ABC, CBS, and Washingtonian Magazine. As a thriving entrepreneur, he has spoken at engagements with organizations including Yelp and the Washington DC Economic Partnership. A true neighbor, he also serves on the board of the DC Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health, and Nutrition and on board for PFLAG, an organization committed to advancing equality for LGTBQ families. In 2018 he was named an ambassador for MLB All-Star Weekend Color Run with Nike and ambassador for Fitbit Local DC.

  • Hello,
    I’m 145 lbs and I’m trying to lose 15 Lbs. I work out every other day for an hour or two. How much protein do I need to take in if I’m burning about 500 calories?

    • Aim for 30% protein and 1000 calorie burn. I tried 500 calories but got nowhere. Once I went to 1000 calories I started shedding weight. Need those 10,000+ steps a day, though.
