It’s National Running Day! Here’s How to Celebrate

060115_Fitbit_BLOG_Running_Day_1200x2048_WD_1Yep, that’s right! Today is another “When did this become a holiday?” holiday. But unlike all those other special days, you won’t have to side-step cupcakes in the break room or feel guilty for forgetting to send mom a card.

Today is a day made just for you and your most comfortable footwear! Need a little motivation to get the party started? Get your legs moving with these tips.

 

If you’ve never laced up your sneaks… Today is the day to do it! Watch the numbers on your Fitbit dashboard tick up higher simply by turning your daily steps into a jog. Even if you only make it to the mailbox before going back to a walk, you’re in the game! Play it up by repeating the effort: walk for 2 minutes, run for 30 seconds, and then do it again. With so many runners hitting the streets, trails, and tracks today, no one will notice you’re a newbie. (Don’t forget to track your workout with the MobileRun feature in your Fitbit dashboard.)

If you’re a regular pavement pounder… Whether you run for fun or for fitness, push the pace or the distance today, and revel in the joy of your muscles working together to propel you farther and faster. Shake things up by doing something out of the ordinary—take a left instead of a right and try a new route, invite a friend to join you, or finish your workout with a celebratory drink. Smoothies or beer, happy hour is infinitely more fun in sweat-wicking fabric!

If you ran a marathon last week, last month, last year… OK, so you’re a performance athlete. You probably already have a run on your training calendar today, so how are you supposed to make it special? Reconnect with your love of running by infusing your regularly scheduled mileage with a little fun. Add in a Fartlek (or five!) and reach for the runner’s high that made you go gaga for split shorts back in the day.
