Rocco DiSpirito’s 3 Tips for a Healthy Kitchen

Rocco DiSpirito

Award-winning chef and best-selling author Rocco DiSpirito is well-known for his work with television shows like Extreme Weight Loss, The Biggest Loser, and Restaurant Divided. Rocco has made it his life’s work to prove that healthy and delicious are not mutually exclusive. To that end, he created an innovative fresh food delivery service called The Delicious Life, which is sought after by celebrities, fans and foodies alike. Here, Rocco shares three tips for staying healthy in the kitchen.

1. Turn Your Kitchen into a Gym

“Cook more meals at home and you’ll burn calories in the process. Many of the dishes in my new book Cook Your Butt Off! will have you burning more calories making them than the recipes even contain.”

“Whisking, stirring and chopping are great calorie burners. Walk to the supermarket, stay on your feet as you cook and turn up the music are just some of the other ways you can get ahead of your calorie intake just by cooking.”

2. Watch What You Sample While Cooking

“It took me a while to realize that every bite counts. Whenever I was in the kitchen, I would sample everything as I cooked. A lick of a spatula while baking (75 calories), a taste of a spoonful of mashed potatoes to check the seasoning (42 calories), sipping a glass of wine while cooking (125 calories)—it all adds up! Once I realized how many calories I was consuming by doing that, I stopped nibbling as much. And so should you, or it will cost you!

3. Keep a Food Log

“Keeping track of your food choices is a simple way to monitor your calories. Logging your food will also give you better insights into what you are eating and when.”

“I teamed up with Fitbit to make food logging easier than ever. Every recipe in my bookCook Your Butt Off! features a barcode you can simply scan with the Fitbit app. The calories and nutritional info are automatically added to your private Fitbit food log.”

  • Your “Cook Your But Off Book” pages 22, 23, 24 has top alkaline foods and top acidic food reversed. 7 or above is alkaline and below 7 is acidic. Oranges and orange juice are between 3&4 and you have them as a top alkaline food. Rice is between 6 &7 and you have it as a top acidic food. I suspect the chart was typed in the reverse and columns switched.
