The Total-Body Combo Move You Can Do Anywhere

One of the things I love about working out is that there are so many options. I can go dancing, hiking, do Body by Simone—whatever I feel like! But sometimes I don’t have a huge chunk of time to devote to exercising or I’m hanging around a set and can’t escape to go to the gym. That’s why there’s one move I keep going back to time and time again: The push-up with a dumbbell row.

Combination moves are awesome—they help you target so many different body parts all at once. (I’m a fan of efficiency!) This one combines push-ups, which we’ve all done a million times, and a row. While a row is normally done standing (you bend over at the waist and lift weights up towards your chest), this one is done when you’re at the top of the push up. That means your arms and core get worked twice with each rep.

The other great thing about it? You can do it anywhere. It’s part of my routine at the gym, but I can also do it in my living room or in a hotel—perfect for when Derek and I are on the road for our Move Beyond tour. Ready to give it a go? Here’s what to do:

Push-Up With Dumbbell Row

Targets: core, chest, upper back, arms

Start in a plank position with each hand holding a dumbbell. Make sure your core and glutes are engaged, hands are under shoulders, feet are hip-width apart, and torso is in a straight line. Perform a push-up, lowering your chest down between your hands, then back up. At the top of the push-up, bring one of the dumbbells up towards your rib cage, then lower it back to the ground. Perform another push-up, then bring the other dumbbell up towards your rib cage. Keep going back and forth until you’ve done 10 reps with each arm.

If this feels too hard, you can perform it on your knees instead of your toes or switch to lighter dumbbells. Even doing this without any weights in your hands at all is tough!

  • My husband and I saw your wonderful show in Sugar Land, Texas. I was wondering if you are putting it o. DVD for sale. We would love to enjoy your show over a nd over again. I sure hop e you will consider doing this.

I have watched you and Derek on DWTS since the first time you appeared. We just love you both and are so happy for your success. Gene Kelly is my favorite dancer, and I think Derek is just as good or better. I think he will do a great job in Singin’ in the Rain.

  • I have watched you and Derek on DWTS since the very beginning. I would love to see you both on tour, but my schedule has not yet permitted. I know it’s awesome. Watching you two and the show (I love Max!) has inspired me to take ballroom dancing – I love it. Keep doing what you do, your fans love you.
