It’s back! Fitbit’s rankings of the Fittest Cities in America and your chance to earn some much-deserved bragging rights.
Once again, Fitbit researchers looked at data* from over 10 million Fitbit users nationwide, taking into account the following metrics:
- Duration of sleep per night
- Daily Reminders to Move goals met
- Daily steps
- Daily active minutes
- Resting heart rate
The results? Well, let’s just say, history didn’t repeat itself. See which city’s residents stepped it up—literally and figuratively—this year.

The title of overall Fittest City in America is based on average rates for duration of sleep, Reminders to Move goals met, daily steps, daily active minutes, and resting heart rate.*

Was Michigan excluded from your data, since it’s not even on the map? LOL
I guess if you know fitness you don’t have to know geography…

We come from a little village in Michigan. To bad you can’t show the best of small towns.

What happened to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when they weren’t even included on your map? A lot of people have fitbits here!
Wisconsin? I am surprised! 😀

Can we see the actual list of ranked active cities please? I’d like to see where my city falls this year as compared to last.
I agree I went to see Tennessee Fitbit Rank
I live 60 miles north of Duluth, MN, in a rural area. Duluth, MN is the largest city we use for healthcare. I lived in Duluth, and loved it so much I would live there again if I could, excluding family needs up here! So, I count myself as a Duluth member.
Ummm……Where’s Michigan?
Where’s Michigan?
Just wondering about the shape of the state of Michigan, lol. Not recognizable.
I’ve never heard of Boston, PA, could that have been Pittsburgh?
I live in Duluth and like to think I contributed to the overall fitness. I too would be interested in stats from around the world
Guess not because the whole state of Michigan isn’t even on the map????
Boulder’s pin is not in the correct location within Colorado
Great to see WI at the top of a list like this rather than drunkest cities in America!!! GO BUCKY!!!!!
I would love to start a Fitbit social event in NC in the coming year, also Fitbit cruise.
Mexico? I’m sure Holland ranks up there? India?
Newfoundland ? New Zealand?
Now let’s get real? These stats are a joke? Minnesota? Wisconsin? Let’s throw in mississippi!
They may walk, but aren’t fit…. Fit for a Buffett

Curious to know how many number of users in all these cities?
Curious to know how users are there in these cites?

Terrible Michigan map outline!
I live in Georgia but did a big bike ride this month in Wisconsin. Which state gets credit for my steps?
What about Europe, who is the fittest nation? Send me the data and I’ll work it out and share the result..
For crying out loud – Michigan isn’t even part of the United States according to this map!
I think there are tons of fitbiters around the world by now, and it´s kind of annoying you say America just for USA. I´m proudly salvadorean and that´s AMERICA too
Yup Vancouver in Canada must rank
Yup Vancouver in Canada must rank
It is always interesting to see that the colder places seem to get the most steps. We lived in Toronto and was always surprised to see them outside being active despite the cold.
This articles are interesting! more of these please! Would love to know how utah does!
Not sure I understand how Boston, PA made the mark. We bike there occasionally from Pittsburgh, and there it is a small, small town. Hurrah though for Boston!
Information is wonderful and my comment likely does not pertain to the author. The map! What happened to Michigan??!! As a resident, I am aware of that the mitten shape of our lower penninsula is well know nationally and internationally. Surrounded by Great Lakes, distinctive shapes are features of both the Upper and Lower Penninsulas. Apparently this was too challenging for the map creator. I mean, all the other states received reasonable representations, even the small states of New England are easily identified. Our states motto? “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you”. Huh? Not by that map.
Interesting looking map…
and Brazil? what is the top ten cities?! 😉
surely it should be anywhere, not just USA and Canada and what about individuals. Broaden the thinking. Cape Town South Africa
Just got a Fit Bit 3 months ago. It’s great. It helped me improve my exercise routine
This data seems off or extremely limited to only a few states! Maryland is a very fit state and yet , crickets lol
Fitbit, Canadians are wearing your product!!!! Don’t ignore us
I am interested in how free world countries compare in fitness to 3rd countries like China and Russia.
WOW! With all the fitness goo-roo’s and great weather in California, it didn’t rank in anything? CRAZY!
It appears stats are from Midwest and East coast what about West coast? I find it hard to believe that there are not high Stepper’s or Fitbit users in California where I’m from!? I avg 13,000-15,000 steps daily
San Diego is the fittest city in America. Most people in San Diego don’t need a fit bit to prove that he/she is fit!
I’m so proud of Wisconsin next time I hope Milwaukee wins!
I suggest that you post my size of cities. Maybe top 20 by population and down from there. There is a big difference between outdoor and indoow and rural and big city. That way more people can use benchmarks that are more in common with each other.
Did you even consider Alaska? Or are we too busy fishing, hunting, cycling, camping, hiking, paddle boarding, surfing the boar tide, kite surfing, gardening, constructing and repairing our roads 22 hours per day during the short summer, mowing our lawns every five days under the midnight sun to count?
[…] how different cities in the US stack up against each other? Well using data gathered by Fitbit, the following cities topped the fit […]
why in the world would you not give at least the top ten for each category
most steps you mention the cities shown and then say Rochester at 8… horrible article
This is a great article!! how about a cruise fitbit?
Wow, a lot of insight in these comments. Any response from Fitbit analyst management would be prudent.
